Epsom Hospital Radio is staffed by volunteers who constantly seek to entertain the patients and staff of Epsom General Hospital.
Epsom Hospital Radio serves the patients of Epsom General Hospital, which covers a large area including Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead, Leatherhead, Stoneleigh, Esher, Oxshott, Cheam, Sutton, Chessington and Banstead.
Whether you have just left Epsom General Hospital, or will be spending some time there in the near future, we hope this website will provide some usefull information about what we do.
Epsom Hospital Radio can be found on the hospital's internal Hospedia broadcasting system, and we are free of charge to listen to.
A group of girl guides took to the airwaves of Epsom Hospital Radio recently after visiting patients at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC), which is based at the hospital.
The 17 girls, all aged between ten and 14, and two leaders, are all part of the 1st Tattenhams Guides, and their visit formed part of their communication badge work.
The girls watched a short presentation about hospital and broadcast radio before visiting patients in the wards of the EOC to collect their record requests. It was then back to the studio, where the guides played our patients' requests on the radio, recorded some jingles and took part in an on-air quiz.
The EOC is a centre of excellence for hip, knee and shoulder operations in the UK. Caren Dove is one of its managers. She said: "It was a pleasure to meet the girl guides and help them understand a little more about what we do. They enjoyed meeting our patients and talking to them and our patients enjoyed meeting them too."
Guide leader Helen Pierce was delighted with the visit. She said: "The girls really enjoyed their visit to the radio station and to the EOC wards as well. They were really excited to be able to try out the radio equipment and line up their own playlists.
"The visit to the wards was a really useful insight for the girls, most of who have never been a hospital patient, and gave them a better understanding of how hospital radio can help a patient to stay positive during a hospital stay.
"We are very grateful to Epsom Hospital and to everybody within the hospital radio team and on the ward for making our visit possible."
Also on the tour was Clyde Whittaker, station manager for Epsom Hospital Radio. He said: "It was our pleasure to welcome the girls to our studios and demonstrate first hand why local radio, and hospital radio in particular, is so important to its audience.
"I hope we managed to spark an interest in hospital radio and maybe welcome some of the girls into our team in the future. I would like to thank those involved, in particular Epsom Hospital and the EOC for their kind support."
Epsom Hospital Radio was founded in 1978 by two local DJ's who met while being treated in the same ward. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day and is run entirely by volunteers.
The Chief Executive of Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals, Matthew Hopkins, has declared Epsom Hospital Radio to be ‘top of the pops’ after spending an evening with volunteers who run the station.
As part of his visit, Matthew spent time learning how the station runs before being interviewed live by DJ (and local GP) James Steinhardt.
Matthew and James chatted about a wide range of subjects, including holidays, hobbies, music and – on a more serious note – the future of the Trust’s hospitals. Matthew was also asked to select three favourite songs, which were played for listeners. They were: Going Underground by The Jam; Fire in the House by Hard Fi; and, Eve of War from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
Matthew Hopkin on the future of Epsom General Hospital

Speaking after the broadcast, Matthew said: "I’d like to say a massive thank you to the team at Epsom Hospital Radio for inviting me to come on the show. They do an absolutely amazing job at keeping our patients entertained. I was really impressed with their professionalism and their commitment to our patients and Epsom Hospital."
Epsom Hospital Radio has been running for more than 34 years and is broadcast live 24/7 to inpatients across the hospital. Epsom Hospital Radio is one of just 200 hospital radio stations in the country and is run entirely by volunteers.
This website aims to provide a little information about our radio station, the programmes that patients staying in the hospital can listen to, as well as the presenters that bring them to you.
For more information about Epsom Hospital Radio, including pictures that our members are taking in and around the studio during their shows and at outside broadcasts and other events we provide the music for, and also to find out about events we'll be doing in the future, follow us on our facebook page.
