The Most Requested Songs of 2013

In 2013, we took at least 505 requests from patients staying in Epsom Hospital.

Of those that were recorded, we can reveal that the top 12 most popular songs were:

Chart Position Artist Song Number Of Requests
8= Elvis Presley (Now And Then, There's) A Fool Such As I 4
Frank Sinatra New York, New York
Nat 'King' Cole Stardust
T. Rex Telegram Sam
Tom Jones Green Green Grass Of Home
7 Frank Sinatra That's Life 5
6 Beatles Help 6
5 ABBA Dancing Queen 7
3= ABBA One Of Us 8
Cliff Richard Move It
2 Nat 'King' Cole Smile 9
1 Frank Sinatra My Way 12

No surprises with the most requested hit of the year then, but will Frank Sinatra be the most requested artist of 2013 too??? Of course he will! But only just.

Of the 224 different artists featuring in the chart, here's how the top ten looks:

Chart Position Artist Number Of Requests
9= Tom Jones 7
Elton John
8 Neil Diamond 8
5 Queen 16
Nat 'King' Cole
Cliff Richard
4 Beatles 21
3 Elvis Presley 22
2 ABBA 24
1 Frank Sinatra 25

Frank remains the firm favourite, with ABBA still riding high since their re-emergence into the charts a few years ago following the release of the movie Mamma Mia.

The sheer number of Elvis and Beatles hits and their enduring popularity keeping them at the top is also no surprise.

A bad year for singers whose names begin with M; Michael Jackson drops from being in the top three to, not even featuring in the top ten, having only been asked for on four occasions.

Also a bad year for Michael Buble; not only have we still not managed to figure out how to put the funny line above the 'e' in his name, but also his former chart topping hit "Haven't Met You Yet" didn't score a single request, also making him drop out of the artist charts too.

A great year for T.Rex, just missing out on the artists top ten, but registering in the singles chart with their hit Telegram Sam. We tried sending them a telegram to congratulate them, but the Post Office said they stopped that service in 1981.

Girl guides take to the air at Epsom Hospital

A group of girl guides took to the airwaves of Epsom Hospital Radio recently after visiting patients at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC), which is based at the hospital.

Click to enlarge Click to enlarge Click to enlarge

The 17 girls, all aged between ten and 14, and two leaders, are all part of the 1st Tattenhams Guides, and their visit formed part of their communication badge work.

The girls watched a short presentation about hospital and broadcast radio before visiting patients in the wards of the EOC to collect their record requests. It was then back to the studio, where the guides played our patients' requests on the radio, recorded some jingles and took part in an on-air quiz.

The EOC is a centre of excellence for hip, knee and shoulder operations in the UK. Caren Dove is one of its managers. She said: "It was a pleasure to meet the girl guides and help them understand a little more about what we do. They enjoyed meeting our patients and talking to them and our patients enjoyed meeting them too."

Guide leader Helen Pierce was delighted with the visit. She said: "The girls really enjoyed their visit to the radio station and to the EOC wards as well. They were really excited to be able to try out the radio equipment and line up their own playlists.

"The visit to the wards was a really useful insight for the girls, most of who have never been a hospital patient, and gave them a better understanding of how hospital radio can help a patient to stay positive during a hospital stay.

"We are very grateful to Epsom Hospital and to everybody within the hospital radio team and on the ward for making our visit possible."

Also on the tour was Clyde Whittaker, station manager for Epsom Hospital Radio. He said: "It was our pleasure to welcome the girls to our studios and demonstrate first hand why local radio, and hospital radio in particular, is so important to its audience.

"I hope we managed to spark an interest in hospital radio and maybe welcome some of the girls into our team in the future. I would like to thank those involved, in particular Epsom Hospital and the EOC for their kind support."

Epsom Hospital Radio was founded in 1978 by two local DJ's who met while being treated in the same ward. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day and is run entirely by volunteers.
